Teaching Philosophy
Knowing how you approach teaching and learning is an important part of being an educator. When discussing my approach to teaching, I incorporate both different and overlapping aspects of all five teaching philosophies. Teaching should promote exploration of ideas, be flexible in curriculum once a core is established, and challenge students to think critically. Teaching should also be a supportive environment that allows both teacher and students to discuss ideas and interpret their reasoning.
Teaching and learning intertwine. Learning should be both discovered and active, and it ought to utilize modeling. Learning should also allow us to understand one another both academically and culturally. It needs to validate our experiences and influences. Lastly, learning should have clear goals for students and exploit prior knowledge of any idea or subject.
How well students learn is a direct interpretation or reflection of how we teach. Just like a balanced teaching philosophy can help us to understand where our students come from and what we value in teaching. Having a good understanding of the four learning theories is important to educators since they allow us to incorporate different learning styles. It is also important to know the different aspects of the teaching philosophies so that we understand our own teaching.
My students should be able to find creative solutions to problems presented to them. They need to be able to demonstrate their understanding of the materials and concepts. It is also important that they feel connected to their work and want to push it to its fullest. It is important that they are comfortable in asking their peers and me questions. Most of all, they should feel welcome and safe in the classroom.
